Support a Wide-Range of Readers

In an ideal world, you will receive curriculum materials at varying levels to support every learner in your class. If, by chance, you do not live in an ideal world, Newsela offers a quick and easy way to ensure every student in the room has an accessible text. I remember feeling so helpless knowing that my students' reading levels did not support the whole class receiving the same document. I feel a little better knowing that there are at least some moments when I can truly meet students where they are.

Support Student Choice

Giving students the ability to choose what they read while allowing them time and space to read for pleasure may be the first step to turn them into life long readers. What we spend time on in class communicates what is important to students, so we must find time to let them read.

There is research that supports the positive effects of student choice on both motivation and comprehension. Even if there is a required text that students must interact with, why not allow them the choice in reading supplementary materials?
